1961 VW Kombi Bus
"Grandpa Snoopy"
Back in the Fall of 1999, my soon to be wife and I stumbled on a small VW ad in the local newpaper "The County Press". The ad read:
FOR SALE: 1961 VW Bus, 1966 21 Window Bus, 1972 VW Bus Call... XXX-XXXX
So one day at work I gave the number a call. A gentleman answered the phone and I inquired about the ad. The guy told me that the 21 window bus was already sold but he still had the '61 and the 72' for sale. Asked him about them and he said the '61 was rusty but complete and the '72 was just basically a solid shell. So, being interested in the '61 I asked when I could come see it. With this the gentleman replied.... "Are you into VW's?" I told him YES! I have 2 dune buggies and a VW Bug. With this he said... "Well.... I also have some other VW parts. Before I let you look at them you have to promise me something. I am planning on selling them as one group. You cannot buy individual pieces. I want to sell the house and property and need the stuff cleaned up and don't want to mess with parting things out. If you are interested I will give you a great deal on the stuff but remember you have to take it all." Well, this really peaked my curiosity so I agreed to the terms and scheduled a time to meet him that evening after work.
To make a long story short.... I ended up buying 2 barns full of VW orignal rust free parts and the 1961 Kombi Bus. It was a find of a lifetime. Here are some pictures of the Bus as we loaded her up to go home.
This is a picture of the bus just after we got done loading it on my soon to be Grandfather-in-laws trailer. This truck/trailer rig is the ultimate for hauling any kind of vehicle. You can see that she is going to need a lot of work. But all very thing is there for the bus, even the middle seat and a roof rack for a Beetle (all packed inside the bus). I really like the bullet turn signals and the small round taillights.
This is a great picture of the bus on her way to her new home. I love the setting of the sun in the background. The plates that are on the bus are from 1976.
Here is pictures of the M Code tag that is located behind the front passenger seat. Also, there is a picture of the original unmolested dash. What a fun looking project.
I hope to start working on this project within the next year or so. After we purchased this bus we had it stored at my in-laws farm. Hopefully I will be able to bring her home soon!
