1972 VW Standard Beetle

This a 1972 Standard Beetle that we lovingly call "Bugsie". We purchased Bugsy on September 27th 1999. This is the condition that we purchased her in. You can see that she is overall pretty solid. The floor pans were original to the vehicle and had no rust holes. Bugsie was originally a light blue but was painted a dark red by the time we found her.

After a small disscussion my soon to be wife and I decided that we wanted Bugsie to be our wedding car. So on December 6th 1999 we started a quick facelift. Our goal was to quickly fix major rust areas and give a quick spray of paint to dress her up for the wedding. The wedding date was scheduled for January 8th, 2000. So with just a little over a month, we dove right in. These pictures show some of the rust damage that we found as we started the project.

Well, with all the hectics of the wedding, I did not get to take any pictures of the bug in process. These are pictures of Bugsy on May 6th, 2000. This is how Bugsie looked for the wedding. We decided to paint her a light blue, close to what she originally looked like. This paint job was done really quick in order to have her ready for the wedding. Also ended up picking up new mexican bumpers to give her that shiny finished look.

Well, after a summer of driving Bugsie around town and getting lots of stares and comments Heather (my wife) decided it was time to do a restoration the right way on Bugsie. So Heather has set to taking Bugsie all apart and removing all the layers of paint. After she is done with this we will have a nice new paint sprayed on (Heather hasn't determined the color yet). Bugsie will also get all new molding and rubber and will have some new metal welded in to fix a few rust areas along with a new passenger side fender to fix the current dent.

Please come back and check on the progress of our beloved Bugsie. I will update this page with new pictures and text as the restoration process continues.
